Mandy Lake Artist

"We must find time to observe things ... as though with our thinking we were in the things themselves.  We must dive down into things, into their inner thought-activity. If we do so, we shall gradually perceive how we are entering the very life of things.  We no longer have the feeling that the things are outside, and we are here in our shell, thinking about them; but we begin to feel how our thought is living and moving in the things themselves.  To a man who has attained this in a high degree, a new world opens up.”

Rudolf Steiner

ARTISTS STATEMENT 'What asks to be painted is a question that concerns all artists. After experimenting with a number of subjects, I found that it is the vast and moody oceans that have captured and sustain my imagination. This complex body of water, that is both fragile and all-powerful, that feeds us and transports us, can also so easily destroy us and sweep our land away before it. Here, on the southern African coast, we are intimately connected to the seas that jostle each other at our southernmost tip and it is this intense relationship that I seek to capture in my paintings. My views of the ocean are not distant seascapes, but rather close up encounters that try to convey some of the sheer splendor of these experiences that are never the same. If those who see my paintings feel, even briefly, a thrill, a resonance, a primeval pull toward the sea, then I will be contented that somehow I have communicated that deep affinity and longing for the primal waters that I believe we all share.' Mandy studied art and design and has a professional career in design, illustration and publishing. Since joining the Spencer Street Studios in 2009 Mandy has dedicated her time to painting. She continues to hone her artistic skills and explore her artistic expression to produce artworks of atmosphere and beauty which capture the soul of the sea. SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT MANDY’S WORK BY JULIA TEALE: 'There is something about the ferocious passion with which Mandy approaches her sea paintings that tells me that it is Mandy herself who so desires to be able to encounter the magic of those waters in the paintings she makes. These are not paintings simply made to please others, to decorate their walls, to satisfy some need to produce pictures. These are paintings made for the sea, in celebration of sea, and may I even dare to say, are the product of a deep love affair between the artist and her subject – the practice of painting being more than demonstrating her considerable skills, rather being a means of capturing this capricious loved one, stealing moments encountered and fixing them forever in her soul through pigment and brush.'

"The voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation.

The voice of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace.”
